A Sanitary Survey of the Rural Portion of Charleston County, with three appendices. Appendix A: An act to provide for a health officer, two sanitary inspectors and a public health nurse for Charleston County, and prescribing their duties (March 11, 1920); Appendix B: First annual report of the Charleston County Health Department (1921); Appendix C: Showing a few of the circular letters used by the County Health Department in their educational work. The survey is a summary of public health conditions and challenges in Charleston County in the early 1920s. Areas addressed include child and maternal health; the condition of housing and schools; sanitation and water supply; communicable diseases such as typhoid, malaria, smallpox, venereal diseases, and others; and more. Statistical reports, budgets, and observations are included.
